Yes, I know, politics don’t mix with friendship, but…
Have you heard of the lawyer, Lynne Stewart? Probably not until lately, as she hasn’t made headlines within the past year. She has been sentenced to 28 months in prison and should be serving life. An excerpt from what the judge said at her trial: “the judge commended Stewart for her “public service, not only to her clients, but to the nation” for representing members of the Black Panthers and the Weather Underground. In a sane world, that would have justified a longer sentence, not a shorter one.” This is the person who represented the “mastermind,” or so-called one, behind the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York. Her arguing point in a nutshell to get this Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman off? She argued that his issuing of a fatwah to blow up the World Trace Center was only part of his (the Sheikh’s) religious duties of being a Muslim Cleric. In addition, she allowed private conversation between the Sheikh and her translator, thus allowing information to be exchanged to the translator and later, passed to another Islamic fundamentalist in the outside world. There were other charges against her, much of which can be read here
