Maggots, Red Wine and Coffee
Well, the second two I really enjoy. The first, not so much. Yet you ask, why am I posting such an unusual title? All of these have to do with the blood, yet in different capacities. Maggots, although squishy, squirmy and down, right yucky, can help heal wounds faster. As quoted, “As they cleanse the wound site the maggots exude an antibacterial agent that has a wide spectrum of activity against many resistant pathogens.” To read a further entomological study, check out this link.
Now, to red wine and coffee. Both of these provide antioxidants, which help protect cells (within the blood) from damage as well as reducing inflammation that causes arteries to narrow. Narrowing arteries can lead to strokes or heart disease, which isn’t good. In addition, both wine and coffee contain polyphenols, which have been linked to a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk. (among groups who were studied that drank 1-3 glasses of red wine a day.) Of course, moderation is key with both wine and coffee, but for so long, coffee, at least, has gotten the wrong rub as being bad for us because of the caffeine. So, indulge yourself with the article here, on red wine and coffee.
